Gwella Contracting Ltd were recently requested to undertake the cleaning of oxygen tanks, cooling fins and associated plant within two compounds at Treliske Hospital, Truro, Cornwall. The tanks were heavily covered with algae and lichen which needed to be broken down with anti-fungal solutions prior to being jet washed.

Cleaning the tanks was not only a requirement from a cosmetic perspective, but also to ensure that the tanks remain cool. The algae on the tanks absorbs the direct heat from the sun causing temperature fluctuations to the tanks & the contents, so removing the algae enables the white surface to reflect the heat from the sun, thus keeping things cooler.

Bespoke plans of work and risk assessment needed to be compiled prior to commencing works, which highlighted the risks associated with working in close proximity to liquid oxygen, high pressure washing and working at height on a mobile elevated work platform.

As you can see from the photos the tanks and plant were dramatically transformed following on from the cleaning works.
