Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust

Date May 2020 Client Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust Services Asbestos Removal Client Testimonial "We were very pleased with the fantastic service and great results achieved by Gwella in completing this challenging project with minimal disruption and on time, all whilst working In a busy hospital during the Covid-19 Pandemic." - Tony Ayers RCHT Estates Department

Cornwall’s largest hospital, the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske, in Truro was originally opened in 1968; parts of which still exist and operate today. For buildings of this age, asbestos was commonly used in the construction process leaving a legacy of asbestos materials which are managed in accordance with Regulation 4 of CAR 2012 by the Trust’s Estates Department.

Two stairwells at the Treliske site had asbestos-containing Artex textured coatings applied to the walls which had deteriorated over time and was beginning to flake. In order to protect the users of the stairwells and prevent further deterioration, the Trust appointed Gwella to remove the flaking coatings, stabilise the substrate and encapsulate the remaining surface throughout both stairwells.

The project was undertaken over a two week period during which time the stairwells were placed out of bounds to staff members and sealed from the hospital. Work was undertaken in full enclosures under negative pressure with our specially constructed welfare decontamination unit on site at all times.

Special arrangements were made to restrict any impact on the operational requirements of the Hospital and to comply at all times with the Construction Leadership Council Site Procedures for working during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
