Gwella Contracting Services were appointed as the Principal Contractor for a large asbestos removal and reinstatement project to the main grandstand roof at Penlee Park, the home of Penzance Football Club.

The historic grandstand occupies a large undercover area for all local supporters to watch their beloved Cornish team’s home fixtures.

Penzance AFC was established in 1888 and were founding members of the South Western League in 1951, maintaining membership of that league until 2007 when they joined the newly formed South West Peninsula League, Division One West.

In common with many other teams that play in black-and-white stripes, Penzance AFC are nicknamed ‘The Magpies’.

Following the recent bad storms and given the age of the asbestos roof, it became unsafe and a potential risk to the public and players; a concern which was raised by the club and the local town council.

The main challenge of the project was timely completion as the club were unable to host home games during the contract period. This required the Gwella team to methodically plan and deliver the programme of works over a tight six week period.

Firstly, the specialist birdcage scaffold design for the task was erected, then our trained team, adhering to the phases set out from the start of the project, commenced the non-licensed asbestos removal, followed by the timely cement fibre re-instatement works, following the additional timber support installation.

Other works included the installation of new front fascia boards and a new club sign. Works were successfully delivered within budget and impressively, two weeks ahead of the programme.

We would like to thank Penzance Football Club and the Town Council for their support throughout the project and wish the club the very best for the remainder of their season.

“Penzance Council are very grateful for the work undertaken by Gwella on the replacement of the Grandstand Roof at Penzance Football Club. From the outset, the office team ensured that the specification and procurement process ran smoothly and were always willing to help answer our questions. From the start of the project, the site team were very professional and worked hard to ensure that the project was completed both on budget, and ahead of schedule. A huge thank you from Penzance Council on the successful delivery of this piece of work.”
