Gwella Contracting Services were appointed as the Principal Contractor for a large asbestos removal and reinstatement project to the main grandstand roof at Bickland park, the home of Falmouth Town AFC.
The historic grandstand built in the late 60’s which occupies a seated area of 500m² for all local supporters to watch their beloved and very successful Cornish team nicknamed ‘The Ambers’ play their home fixtures.
Following all of the bad storms and weather in early 2020, the large asbestos corrugated roof became unsafe and a risk to the public and players which was raised by the club and granted for replacement by their insurance.
The challenge of the project was keeping the main grandstand, its adjoining tunnel and changing rooms ‘bone dry’ during one planned operation. This challenge required the Gwella team and its site guys to expertly plan their programme of works over a 4 week period which was executed to a tee. Firstly, the specialist birdcage scaffold design for the task in hand was erected by ‘ARW Scaffolding’, then our trained team adhering to the phases set out from the start of the project commenced the non-licensed asbestos removal followed by the timely cement fibre re-instatement with various fixtures and fittings to be undertaken across the roof. Other works included the installation of new roof skylights so the tunnel had more natural sunlight coming through, repair and strengthening to existing timbers and the grandstand’s steel frame, along with updating the grandstand’s rainwater goods with new front and rear guttering and downpipes all fit for purpose.
“We at Falmouth Town would to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Gwella Contracting Services for the works undertaken on replacing the asbestos roof of our main stand. Your company were professional and the works have been completed to a high standard. The workforce that carried the works were helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them.
We are especially grateful to you for the way you coordinated your works with the neighbours that are behind the ground, which was highly beneficial to the successful conclusion of this project.
We will have no hesitation in employing Gwella on future projects and therefore look forward to working with you again; it was a pleasure working with you and your team, demonstrating a positive “can and will do approach” throughout.
In conclusion, please forward my thanks to Olly and the team for their contribution to making this project the success it is.”
